Decluttering is fun and freeing!

Last updated on

Did you know there is a very big reason why you feel so overwhelmed when you look around at your clutter and think about getting organized? It’s because all clutter is delayed decisions. As you look around at your things, you feel overwhelmed with the amount of decisions you’ll have to make, so we normally tend to just delay getting organized longer without realizing why. Once you are empowered with the knowledge that it’s just a matter of making those decisions, de-cluttering is actually fun and freeing! Don’t get me wrong, it’s work. But it’s actually very therapeutic. Not only… read more »

Closet update

Last updated on

I finally made myself block out some time to declutter and organize my closet. It took me about 3 hours start to finish. I was right when I said that I thought at least 80% of the clothes in my closet would end up being donated. I dropped off the clothes that no longer fit me at Mercy Ministries, which is a home for troubled or abused teenage girls. They get to live there completely free while they seek help dealing with their pasts. Not only do I feel great about tackling my closet, I also know that I’ve made… read more »

I remember when…

Last updated on

I can still remember a time so vividly, almost like it happened yesterday. When in fact, it’s been closer to 20 years ago (yikes!). I was a recently divorced, single mother of two young girls, 6 months old and 3 years old. I held a very good full time job, but since we were not receiving any type of financial support from their father or my family, and I had to pay ENORMOUS daycare bills, were struggling to put it mildly. We had just the very basic things in our apartment. What I remember most is that we only had… read more »

Discarding gold, silver or platinum?

Last updated on

I recently had a tooth pulled that had a crown on it. The dentist told me to send the crown to Garfield Refining. They buy any gold, silver or platinum bearing items for cash on the spot. Within a week I received a check for $10.10 for my crown that I would have normally just thrown away, unaware there was another option. Such items may show up when emptying drawers of old school rings, Grandma’s old-fashioned jewelry that’s not repairable, useless old watches, defunct sterling silver, old so-called keepsakes that you’ve forgotten that are just taking up space. Things like… read more »

Your unwanted shoes save lives

Last updated on

Isn’t that a fantastic thing? Your old unwanted shoes that are just laying around in your closet can save someone’s life. Did you know you had that power? Well you do, with the help of The Shoeman Water Projects! I have had the good fortune of meeting the founder of Shoeman Water Projects, George Hutchings, on several occasions over the years and to learn about his ministry. It is amazing to me the power that each one of us has to really change the world if we believe we can. George had already been collecting shoes for children in Kenya… read more »

Recycling: Make a difference

Recycling doesn’t end when you put your recyclables at the curb. If you follow the tips provided by the St Louis County Health Department listed below, you can make a positive difference: Look for products made with recycled materials. Read labels to make sure you are buying products made with recycled material. Try to purchase products made from at least 30% post-consumer recycled material. Shop around! Purchase energy efficient electronics and appliances. Buy… read more »

Is your medicine cabinet overflowing?

Last updated on

It’s so easy to find yourself overloaded with expired and unused medication. Most likely a big part of the reason you still have all of those unused medications around is because you don’t know how to dispose of them properly. We’ve learned over the years that just tossing your medicine into the trash or flushing it down the sink or toilet has negative consequences. There is growing evidence that throwing out unused medications improperly is contributing to traces of pharmaceuticals being detected in the environment, primarily in the water and soil. This may have a harmful effect on the environment… read more »

Simple crafty recycling idea

Last updated on

In response to my blog last week about giving your Christmas cards to St Jude’s Ranch for Children, I received the following suggestion from one of our blog readers, Debra Lagemann with Seven Sisters Home Designs. With her permission I am copying it here for you to enjoy. I think it’s a fantastic idea! “I keep this year’s Christmas cards to make next year’s gift tags. I cut out a pretty, cute or fun picture from the front, punch a hole into it, write to and from on the back and tie it onto the package. Every tag is different,… read more »

An exciting announcement – The Stuff Stop®

Last updated on

I’m writing today about a dream of mine that has finally come true. I’ve always been passionate about connecting people’s unwanted stuff with people who need that very stuff. I was passionate about this long before I became a professional organizer and that passion has only gotten stronger since I began seeing how much stuff was ending up in landfills. Last Wednesday I launched a new website that I created called The Stuff Stop®. The Stuff Stop®. is a FREE nationwide community resource that helps people dispose of the things they no longer need, use or love in a responsible,… read more »
