As I’ve told people for years, all clutter represents delayed decisions. If you want to know all of the fascinating details about why we tend to hold onto our stuff and delay making decisions, you’ll definitely want to get a copy of our book, The Truth About Clutter: Why Am I Holding on to This? I can tell you that I’ve held on to having a blog on our website for many years even though I seldom get around to blogging. That’s because I know the importance of having blog posts for website SEO. It also makes our site seem… read more »

Why is it so hard to let go?

You’ve probably heard me say a hundred times that all clutter is delayed decisions. Well if we know that, why don’t we just make the decisions? We don’t make the decisions because we’re so busy that we don’t have time to slow down and think through why we are keeping things. Here are just a couple of common reasons that people hold on to things. (**In July 2016, I finished my book about this very subject which goes into even more in depth details and insight. Did you just call me Fatso?

About 7-8 years ago I found myself knee deep in depression. At that time, I didn’t realize that I had turned to food for comfort and happiness. By the time I realized it, I had put on 50 lbs! Needless to say, none of my clothes fit me anymore. I held on to those clothes though because I knew I was going to lose the weight and fit into all of the clothes again SOMEDAY. Since I had spent a lot of money on the clothes and some of them were relatively new, I wondered how I could just give… read more »

Do you suffer from the “I’m gonna’s”?

A big culprit for allowing clutter to remain in our lives, is what I lovingly refer to as the I’m gonna’s. This is the excuse I hear most often. I would guess that you may have said this yourself a time or two. I swear I’m going to write a book about it someday because the list is endless. (**July 2016 the book was published. Get your copy of The Truth About Clutter: Why Am I Holding on to This.) I’m gonna fix it I’m gonna return it I’m gonna donate it I’m gonna read it I’m gonna recycle it… read more »

Why we hold on to our stuff

Last updated on

There are some common reasons that we hold on to our stuff. Once we realize what is stopping us, it becomes easier to acknowledge it and then let it go. It actually is very empowering and freeing to let things go. Fear – We are afraid to let it go because we might need it some day. If you take the time and think the items potential use all the way through, you’ll more than likely realize that chances are you really won’t need it. Denial – Letting go means saying goodbye to things, people or a time that you’re… read more »

Why we keep stuff

Yesterday I reached for a perfume bottle with just a few sprays left in it, and then stopped myself from using it because if I used it, then it would be gone. I had to laugh when I realized that I’ve been doing that very same thing daily for at least a year. You see, it’s my favorite perfume, I wore it for years. Sadly they quit making it in 2004, and I wasn’t ready to let go of it. In 2007, a client had a bottle of it that she no longer wanted and so she offered it to… read more »

Clutter represents delayed decisions

Last updated on

This is the most eye opening statement that I share with my clients. It’s true! Clutter is nothing but delayed decisions. I know we are all busy and just don’t feel like we have the time to tackle our clutter. But if you think about it long enough, you’ll realize that it is not just that we are too busy to deal with our clutter, but we also realize that to deal with the clutter we must make decisions. Realizing the necessity to make decisions in order to declutter only makes us put it off longer. The more we put… read more »

Use it or lose it

Every single thing that we own has a story behind it. Many of our items represent things that we had hoped to do but just never got around to. Rather than facing all of that reality head on, we just default to keeping things so we don’t have to deal with it. That’s where hiring a professional organizer comes into play. A big part of the service we provide as professional organizers is coaching people through the agonizing decisions about their stuff. Last week while working with a client, we started going through a gigantic paper pile. With each piece… read more »

Our stuff can trigger painful memories

My youngest daughter got married last week. Since she loves to cook (I do not), I decided that the perfect wedding present for her would be to create her own recipe box filled with our family recipes that she could take with her. That way she would be taking good memories of home and the many times we cooked those items together throughout her life too. While I was going through the recipes and retyping them for her, I stumbled across this recipe that my brother printed out just before his death. As you can see, I wrote on the… read more »
