How many times have you heard that when you get organized you simply find a home for everything? It’s just that simple. By taking the time to assign homes for everything, there are never any questions where you will find things, or where you should put things. Assigning a home for everything even means figuring out where your remote controls will live. A great home for the remote would be a decorative bucket that you already have. This could sit on the coffee table, entertainment center or on top of the TV so you have easy access to it. Voila, simple!

As much as we all hate to admit it, here in St Louis, winter is coming. Take this weekend to prepare. Disconnect hoses and store them for the winter. Turn off outside water supply. Cover or put away patio furniture and decor. Get lawnmower tuned up and prepared for next season. Find snow shovel and put it in an easy to reach/find location. Clear garage so that you can park in it for the winter. Fill windshield washer fluid in car. Make sure you have a windshield scraper.

It’s imperative that whatever organizing system or container you set up is super easy to use or it won’t last. Here are some common mistakes people make: Leave room to grow. You buy a container that is the exact size for what you have and you don’t leave room for growth. Within no time, your stuff will be laying next to the container instead of in it. Too many files. Don’t make your filing system overly complicated or the filing just won’t get done. Rather than having a folder for each of your 3 cars, just have one folder for… read more »
It’s so funny how people that clean houses never take the time to clean their own. People that build websites never take the time to keep their own updated. Well, I’ve been so busy helping others get organized that I’ve let my own space go and it’s driving me crazy. So I am going to tackle them this week, beginning with my closet. I am dreading this as much as any of my clients do. Why? Because it is so time consuming, depressing because I’ll have to face the fact that most of my cute clothes don’t fit anymore because… read more »
Do you dump whatever you don’t want in the basement? Do you remember what’s in your basement? Are you overwhelmed at the thought of tackling the basement? Do you wish you could use your basement as a family room or extra bedroom rather than a storage area? Most anyone I talk to has a basement full of stuff they haven’t really looked at in years. They share with me the amount of stress they feel about the basement at all times. Though they never express those feelings verbally to anyone, they are feeling the weight of the clutter at all… read more »
While working on a client’s basement last week we spent 5 hours going through Christmas stuff. That seems almost unbelievable since she didn’t have an excess of Christmas stuff, doesn’t it? You may be asking yourself why in the world it would take two people 5-hours to sort through and organize just Christmas stuff. The truth is that getting organized takes time. But the time, energy and money that is spent getting organized is just a portion of the time, energy and money that you spend by not being organized. Because we took the time to try out all of… read more »
When I found the hanging jewelry organizer, I was ecstatic! With two daughters, there was jewelry everywhere. And more importantly, when you wanted to wear something, it was always very difficult to figure out who left it where. That all changed with this hanging jewelry organizer. This is a perfect example of what professional organizers are referring to when we talk about creating systems for your stuff. Now the stress and aggravation we used to feel when searching for that perfect necklace is gone. We all know where the jewelry goes, so it’s easy to return it there. It’s also… read more »
Do you have plastic shopping bags everywhere? Falling out of pantries? Hanging out of drawers? Some in the kitchen? Some in the garage? Some in the basement? If so, this grocery bag holder is the solution. You simply wall mount this in a convenient location (mine is inside my pantry) and then you can store all of your empty plastic bags in one convenient location. It’s also great because it helps you set limits on the number of plastic bags you keep, and makes you more aware of the need to return your excess plastic bags to the store to… read more »
What? Why would you say that? Because there is seldom a home that we walk into that doesn’t have lots of cute organizing containers. I always say if a company makes a basket and puts a cute little bow on it, people are going to buy them up like hot cakes. The problem with buying these cute little containers is that you are making an uneducated decision. You think to yourself oh that’s so cute, I know I can use it for something. The problem is that you don’t have a plan for it. You think your CDs might fit… read more »
