Recycling: Make a difference

Last updated on

Recycling doesn’t end when you put your recyclables at the curb. If you follow the tips provided by the St Louis County Health Department listed below, you can make a positive difference: Look for products made with recycled materials. Read labels to make sure you are buying products made with recycled material. Try to purchase products made from at least 30% post-consumer recycled material. Shop around! Recycled-content products are everywhere. Shop to reduce waste. Buy products that have little or no packaging. Minimize waste and energy consumption by buying e-books and MP3 players. Purchase energy efficient electronics and appliances. Buy… read more »

Skip the plastic bag

Last updated on

A simple action you can take to help the environment is to pay attention to what the clerk is bagging for you and just say no. In most cases a quick trip into the store doesn’t even warrant a bag. Do you really need a bag for your gallon of milk if you are going to carry it by the jug handle anyway? Does your bag of potatoes need a bag? What about when you run in the store for 1 or 2 items? The bag isn’t really necessary, is it? Did you know? About a hundred billion plastic bags… read more »

Is your medicine cabinet overflowing?

Last updated on

It’s so easy to find yourself overloaded with expired and unused medication. Most likely a big part of the reason you still have all of those unused medications around is because you don’t know how to dispose of them properly. We’ve learned over the years that just tossing your medicine into the trash or flushing it down the sink or toilet has negative consequences. There is growing evidence that throwing out unused medications improperly is contributing to traces of pharmaceuticals being detected in the environment, primarily in the water and soil. This may have a harmful effect on the environment… read more »

Great new shredding resource

Last updated on

A colleague of mine recently shared a new inexpensive resource for shredding with me and I just had to pass that information along to you! The company’s name is American Document Destruction and they are located at 10600 Kahlmeyer Dr in St. Louis (63132). Their phone number is 314-423-8388. If you have 10 or more boxes of shredding and you bring them to their location, it’s FREE. If you have under 10 boxes, there is a flat fee of $5.00. You are welcome to watch them destroy your documents. My colleague says she has always found the employees there to… read more »

An exciting announcement – The Stuff Stop®

Last updated on

I’m writing today about a dream of mine that has finally come true. I’ve always been passionate about connecting people’s unwanted stuff with people who need that very stuff. I was passionate about this long before I became a professional organizer and that passion has only gotten stronger since I began seeing how much stuff was ending up in landfills. Last Wednesday I launched a new website that I created called The Stuff Stop®. The Stuff Stop®. is a FREE nationwide community resource that helps people dispose of the things they no longer need, use or love in a responsible,… read more »

Declutter before the holidays

Last updated on

It’s a great idea to make room for all of the new stuff that you know will be coming in during the holidays. Here are a few simple tips to accomplish that: TOYS: Discard broken toys. Donate seldom used toys to someone in need. Box up at least half of the toys and store them elsewhere. In six month you can re-introduce them to the children. They’ll feel like it’s Christmas all over again. CLOTHES: We only wear 20% of our clothes, 80% of the time. Purge and donate the clothes that you never wear. Set a limit on how… read more »

Free ongoing electronic recycling

Last updated on

Jeffco Subcontracting Inc (JSI) in Arnold has added a new electronic recycling service. What makes this so special is that the work is done by workers at Jefferson County’s sheltered workshop. The workshop was started by a group of parents who wanted a place for their developmentally disabled children to work after high school. Computers and other electronics are filled with metals and wires that can be recycled. The circuit boards, for example, can be sold by the pound. It just takes a little effort to separate the parts from the computer. Computers and monitors are being accepted at no… read more »

What’s it really worth?

Last updated on

I bet you’re holding on to things with the intention of selling them someday to make a hefty profit. But you’re life is so busy and that plan keeps falling to the bottom of your to-do list. The problem is that with each and every item you plan to sell, but never get around to, your clutter increases. A colleague of mine recently recommended Value My Stuff as a great online resource to find out the true value of the items you think you can sell and make a small fortune on. You may just find out that what you… read more »

Clutter creeps in

Last updated on

Unfortunately, staying organized and clutter-free is a process that never ends. It’s something that you always have to stay on top of, always have to devote time to and constantly have to tweak. Just as maintaining a weight loss requires constant attention, so does being organized. But it becomes easier and easier as habits and systems are created to do just that. You really have to keep a keen eye on everything that comes into your home or office to stay on top of it because it’s really easy for clutter to creep in. I’m a professional organizer, I love… read more »

Ready to part with some stuffed animals?

Last updated on

I recently became aware of the fact that alot of fire departments and police departments like to receive donations of small stuffed animals. They give the stuffed animals to children who are the victims of house fires, car accidents, en route to a hospital, or kids who are involved in custody incidents. A great place to start looking for more information on how you can donate your stuffed animals to this great cause is by visiting SAFE’s (Stuffed Animals For Emergency) website and/or contacting your local fire and police departments.
