Getting organized is a very detailed process that can be accomplished very simply if you have the ability to break things down into manageable chunks, and not look at the big picture.
Goal setting is really no different. Many people are unable to reach their goals because they are paralyzed and overwhelmed by how big they are. They seem so unattainable. However, if you take the time to break down the steps to getting to your goal, it is much simpler and can be very rewarding since you celebrate each little success.
Let’s say that your goal is to lose 40 pounds, like mine is. The magnitude of losing 40 pounds in itself immediately makes me feel defeated. It seems unattainable. I used to swim for 30 minutes 4-6 days a week, and Weight Watchers was a lifestyle for me, not a diet. Of course when I think of losing weight now, I think that I must do it to this extreme, this perfectly. When honestly, it really could be done quite easily if I were to break it down into manageable steps. Rather than feeling like I have to do everything all at once, I tackle as many of these steps as I think of, or feel I can, at any time.
- Make healthier food choices.
- Be more aware of what I am eating, and how much.
- Choose water over soda.
- Walk the dogs around the block.
- Take the steps not the elevator.
- Limit sweets.
The more times I succeed at any of these little steps, the more empowered I feel that I can reach my big goal. I’ll keep you posted on the small steps I’m taking. What goal are you having trouble accomplishing? Let’s break it down.
