We’ve got a winner! Valiha Strecker posted the winning comment on last week’s blog and won her own set of Rubbermaid Drawer Organizers. Congratulations Valiha and thanks Rubbermaid for making this contest possible! I was extremely excited about Valiha’s response when I notified her that she’d won the contest. With her permission, I’m sharing portions of her email here. Well, I have to say that your posts really got me motivated. I not only cleaned out our junk drawer but I also conquered one one of our closets and then got started on our basement… which is a mess! And… read more »

Organization 101 – day four

After completing all of the steps we’ve discussed already, you’re finally down to what will actually stay in the space. Now it’s time to figure out what containers to use for the items that are staying. Thank goodness in this project we already know what containers we’re using thanks to Rubbermaid. They gave me a set of drawer organizers to try out and want to gift a set to one of my blog readers that leaves a comment…hint, hint. The winner will be selected Monday. Before selecting your container, you’ll need to make sure that the container is the right… read more »

Organization 101 – day three

Step Three Now that we’ve gotten rid of everything that doesn’t belong in this space, we can get a clearer picture of the things that will really be living there. Sort the remaining items into groups, or categories, of like things with like things. In our example, I’ve grouped the tools that will stay with the other tools that will stay, the batteries with the batteries, the screws together, etc. This step helps you to take another look at how much you have of each item and perhaps to let go of any other excess you might not have realized… read more »

Organization 101 – day two

Step One The first step in getting organized is to determine what your vision is for the space or system you are working on. My vision for the junk drawer is to be able to quickly find what I need, quickly retrieve it and quickly return it so I can easily find it next time I need it. Step Two Remove anything from the space or system that doesn’t belong there based on your vision. As you can see, my junk drawer had a lot of tools living there that really belonged in my tool box. There were about 5-7… read more »

Organization 101 – day one

This week I will lead you step by step on how to get organized on your own, using my junk drawer as an example. Regardless of what room or task you are organizing, you will follow the same simple steps we’ll outline this week. This is a before picture of my junk drawer. It has been a problem spot for me for a long time because I know there are alot of things in the drawer that don’t really belong there. Because of that, it makes it difficult to open or close the drawer. And, more importantly, it is hard… read more »

Winter storm warning

We’re expecting a big storm in St Louis today. This is another situation where it pays to be organized and all it takes is a little planning ahead. Make sure your wiper washer fluid and gas tank is full in your car. Keep an ice scraper, bag of kitty litter (for traction in case you car get stuck) and blanket in your car. Have a snow shovel and salt handy. Have a well-stocked refrigerator.

Christmas gifts

I had a fantastic Christmas, and hope that you did too. Before things get back to normal, it’s important to find a spot for all of the things you want to return or exchange to land. Many times things that are meant to be returned are lost within our other stuff and by the time we find them, it’s too late to return them. For the next week or so, as you move throughout your home, keep an eye open for anything that you know you need to return or exchange. Attempt to get the receipt from whomever gave you… read more »

Answer the phone!

At Simplified Living Solutions, we get so many phone calls that it’s hard to keep up with them. If I had to pick the hardest park of owning and running this business, it would be trying to return all of the phone calls when time allows. Although I keep very detailed notes of who called, I don’t always keep notes of when, or if, I called them back. Eventually those needed calls drop completely off the radar at times. I have finally found, and invested, in a product that I think is going to be the perfect solution for me.… read more »

Planning will get you places

I’ve been spending alot of time working on next year’s budget, marketing strategies and business plan. To be honest, it’s a lot of work. Most of my fellow small business owners are doing the same thing. Though it seems like I am giving up alot of paid time, and falling behind on my daily tasks, I know how important it is to take the time to get clear on your vision. Without a vision, or a plan, you will continously feel like you are just spinning your wheels. You’ll wake up in a few years, not any further than you… read more »
