What is a zone?

Last updated on

A big part of getting organized is determining the zones for each area you are working in and then only allowing those things that belong in that zone to live there. What do I mean by zones? A zone is a specified part of a room, or area, that is designated for a certain activity, or a certain type of items. For instance, a home office may be divided into the working zone, the office supply zone, etc. A kitchen might be divided into the food prep zone, the cooking zone, etc. When everyone understands the purpose, or activity that… read more »

The cost of disorganization

Last updated on

Disorganization can cost you. Having your time, tasks and stuff organized prevents: Lost information that is never found, resulting in missing important deadlines or events. Misplaced information that takes time to find, decreasing your productivity. Late fees and poor credit rating. Auto renewals that go into effect without human/manual intervention. Rush or overnight fees to compensate for lateness. Duplicate purchases because you can’t find what you need. Storage units costs to store things you think you might need someday. It’s hump day

Last updated on

Happy Wednesday everyone! Today is a great day to review the goals and plans you had for this week (hopefully you jotted them down somewhere—and can find them) and see how you’re doing on them. Take the time to mark off those tasks that you’ve completed. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment to mark things off your list. Several of the things on your list may have already taken care of themselves. If so, cross those items off too. Looking over the things still on your list, decide which items are the most important, or most difficult, for you to… read more »

Simple quick tips to tackle any small area in your home or office this weekend. Pick a small area to start in. Sort like items with like items. Make a plan

Last updated on

If you take the time this morning to map out a plan for the week, you’ll be amazed at how much more productive you’ll be. It will only take you about 15 minutes. Think about what goals you want to (need to) accomplish this week. Then schedule or plan time in your calendar to get those things done. You will be the most successful if you tackle the toughest things first. It’s also good to plan a reward for yourself such as telling yourself after I work on this project for 2 hours, I will get my favorite coffee from… read more »

Fun facts

Here’s some food for thought. Statistics say: 80% of all papers filed are never looked at again. 50% of all filed material going to storage has no retention value and should have been destroyed. We wear 20% of our clothes all of the time. The other 80% are there just in case. The average American receives 49,060 pieces of mail in their lifetime; one third of it is junk mail. For every hour spent in the planning phase, three to four hours are saved during the execution stage. Save yourself time by being proactive. The average office has 19 copies… read more »

A home for everything

Last updated on

How many times have you heard that when you get organized you simply find a home for everything? It’s just that simple. By taking the time to assign homes for everything, there are never any questions where you will find things, or where you should put things. Assigning a home for everything even means figuring out where your remote controls will live. A great home for the remote would be a decorative bucket that you already have. This could sit on the coffee table, entertainment center or on top of the TV so you have easy access to it. Voila, simple!

Why live an organized life?

Last updated on

I live an organized life because I like a sense of calm. I want to feel comfortable if guests drop by unannounced. I want to find my phone and my keys instantly. I want to put my hands on a much-needed document at a moment’s notice. I want to locate the perfect outfit in my closet. I want to grab all of the ingredients for my dinner recipe. And I want to do all of these things (and more) easily, quickly and in a relaxed manner. I want to breathe easy and smile and have lots of enthusiasm and motivation… read more »

It’s not too early to begin preparing for the holidays. As a matter of fact, it’s a fantastic idea to get started now before the stress and rush of the holidays is upon us. Here are a few things you can do in advance to get a head start on things: Get copies made of this year’s Christmas picture if you will be including one in your Christmas cards. Buy, address, sign and stamp Christmas cards so all you’ll have to do later is drop them in the mail. Pull out Christmas decorations and determine if you need to purchase… read more »
